Ice follies

Just as the winter brings snow, it also brings a flurry of letters complaining about inadequate snow/ice removal by the writer’s municipality or by neighbors and businesses. Icy sidewalks have been the bane of pedestrians this week, judging by letters we’ve received. One writer wants to know, “Why isn’t any snow or ice ever cleared on the islands in the middle of the streets in White Plains, where there’s a huge amount of foot traffic?” and states that “landlords of many vacant stores do not arrange to have snow or ice on their sidewalks cleared. The city should do it, and charge the landlords.” Another notes that “The sidewalk outside of the Yonkers Parking Authority at Ludlow Station is a solid sheet of extremely dangerous ice and has been for days.” A third writer explains, “The ice that’s on many people’s sidewalks now is there because of a half-inch of snow that was deemed too unimportant to clear away, even though it would have taken only a few minutes. If you clear most of the snow away, the sun will do the rest. Leave it there to be trampled and it turns to ice,” and reminds homeowners that they “could be sued if someone is injured falling on the ice.”
As to the dangers of ice, I need look no further than our cartoonist, Matt Davies, just back after slipping on ice in his driveway on New Year’s Eve day and breaking his collarbone. So, with more snow on the way, it would be wise to break out the shovels and the salt.
