News that the Westchester County Executive’s office only spent $18,569.67 in expenses in 2008 compared to $34K in 2007 didn’t garner any kudos from readers, many of whom said that this is still too much and there are plenty of places where more cuts can be made.
In the forums, several people took exception to taxpayer money being spent on meals when the economy is in dire straits and many residents are facing hunger and foreclosure.

The whole structure of compensation and perks paid to county officials is wrong and provides the opportunity, and perhaps even the incentive, for abuse. Travel, meals, auto expenses, cell phones, etc., should be on a reimbursement-only basis. … Taxpayers have been footing the bill for official entitlements for decades and this has to stop. County officials and other highly paid public servants on the taxpayer dole must learn to live on their salary like the rest of us.
I have a feeling spending will only be down in an election year. Once these (people) get re-elected watch the wasteful spending come right back.
I don’t know about the rest of you but I dont know too many people that get their meals paid for when they go to work. Why are we still paying for these peoples meals? This is a disgrace. Pay for your own meals people.
