A conversation with the Editorial Board

Surprised

November
4

We on the Editorial Board were as surprised as anyone to see the complete drubbing that County Executive Andy Spano took from his challenger Rob Astorino in the polls yesterday. Astorino seized on taxpayer exhaustion in this famously “highest property tax in the nation” county  and promised to cut the size of county government.  But perhaps we shouldn’t have been so surprised. Readers who have followed our thorough coverage of public employee salaries and pensions have been outraged at the gap between public and private sector benefits. Considering so many voters are facing unemployment and uncertain futures, they may have just found satisfaction in pushing the “throw-the-bums-out” lever.

Now comes the post-mortem. We’ll spend today looking at voter turnout, district by district and talking to experts to figure out the why behind the numbers.

That you were so surprised shows how out of touch the effete editorial board is with the real world.

SUPRISED? I WASNT. SPANO, LIKE YOU, DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE TO WHATS GOING ON. I WOULD ONLY HAVE BEEN SUPRISED IF HE WON. I WROTE ON THIS PAGE WEEKS AGO THAT NOT ONE INCUMBENT DESEVED TO BE RETURNED TO OFFICE. SPANO, WITH HIS IMPERIAL RULE, WAS THE PRIME EXAMPLE OF CAREER POLITICIANS. WILL THINGS CHANGE? FIRST CHANGE WILL BE THE SAVINGS OF $1200. A DAY FOR SPANOS CHAUFRER DRIVEN CAR AND HIS SECURITY DETAIL. THEN HE SHOULD ELIMINATE ALL COUNTY CARS. THERE IS A LOT OF WAYS TO SAVE TAXPAYER MONEY. THE BEST WAY WOULD BE TO ELIMINATE COUNTY GOVERNMENT. JUST ANOTHER BEAURACRATIC LAY TO COLLECT TAXES.
