For all the bellyaching over taxes, Lower Hudson Valley taxpayers routinely skip school board and budget votes, leaving those tasks to others. The others, as we know, have responded over the years with often-steep increases in school taxes, propelling our region to the nation’s leader in taxes. (We’re # 1!!!) Maybe the Great Recession will motivate more people to vote, or maybe not.
Large percentages of voters skipped the polls when budget increases were approaching double digits; this year, most proposed budgets are coming in flat or nearly so. So maybe the work will be left to others once again.
Anyway, the Editorial Board starting Wednesday engages our democracy anew; LIVE webstreamed interviews with Westchester and Rockland school board candidates commence on LoHud. We’ll interview scores of candidates between now and the voting, but we won’t get to every district featuring contested races. I wish that we could.
Here is a link to the schedule. And if you are a candidate, we appreciate your letting us know if you will join us.
