A conversation with the Editorial Board

Family court facilities, Yonkers gym teachers and immigration

July
29

Here’s a look at opinion content published today, July 29:

Family court facilities: Editorial
We comment on news that the state Office of Court Administration has issued a report saying that the family-court facilities in Yonkers and New Rochelle are among the worst in the state. We write:

… It is long past time for the county to create family court facilities in southern Westchester that embody the dignity the justice system should convey.

The report, released in June, describes courtrooms so packed they violate fire codes; buildings without adequate entrances, exits or elevators; quarters so cramped that opposing parties in abuse cases often spend hours waiting together in close, and unsafe, proximity; and lines so long they stretch out of the lobby with litigants waiting on the street for their chance at justice. …

Yonkers gym teachers: Reisman

Phil Reisman comments on news that 21 gym teachers have been pink-slipped in the Yonkers School District, a fact that troubles him:

… For the life of me, I don’t know how the obesity epidemic — a national health crisis that has dominated the headlines for months on end — can be fought and won without fully recognizing that the frontline in that battle has to be, and can only be, gym class.

Arizona immigration law: Commentary
Sarah Thomas Maldonado, head of the Immigration Law Practice at Jones Garneau LLP, with offices in Scarsdale, New York City and Stamford, and a former assistant district counsel at the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, offers a commentary piece on the need for an overhaul of the U.S. immigration system.
