Kirsten Gillibrand: Endorsement
We endorse Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, appointed by Gov. David Paterson to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton in 2009, in a race to finish Clinton’s term. Challenging Gillibrand is Republican Joe DioGuardi, a Republican veteran and former congressman. We write:
… We endorse Gillibrand, who has broadened her thinking to match her broader constituency since she entered the Senate in January 2009. Gillibrand has shown her willingness to listen to the other side of the argument and respond to the needs of her constituency, which is what elected officials ought to do. Elected as a congresswoman in 2006, Gillibrand, who is from Hudson, represented a conservative rural upstate district. As a senator from New York, however, she represents the whole urban/suburban melting pot as well.
“In a lot of these issues, it’s a case of learning more and expanding my view,” Gillibrand has said in published reports.
That’s a rare admission in our fractured political culture. …
