Nearly 500 geese inhabiting the Sprain Lake golf course in Yonkers were shipped upstate on July 2 to be euthanized. Many LoHud.com readers have condemned this as inhumane while others offer justifications:
“This is unfortunate that officials in N.Y. either don’t have either the brains or know how to research other humane alternatives to this problem. Let’s just kill everything that gets in our way, it’s easier that way. They put a wildlife refuge near an airport and are surprised when there are problems with the birds and plane engines.”
— Dianne Porter
“When I was a kid in Rockland 35 years ago there were more ducks than geese, that’s totally changed. When one animal overpopulates all the other animals suffer. Population control maintains the health of all the animals, and gets rid of a disgusting mess.”
— John Taggart
“Golf courses are animal sanctuaries as evidenced by these ‘American’ geese, woodchucks and coyotes at Van Cortlandt. We don’t need another strip mall. Having played Sprain, [I know] these birds were a nuisance and had no fear of the golf ball. There are also woodchucks bigger than house cats there.”

Advertisements at various Metro-North stations in Westchester show side-by-side maps of the shrinking Palestinian territory to call attention to the millions of Palestinian refugees displaced from their homes. While the director of the American Jewish Committee in Westchester has labeled the posters anti-Semitic, many LoHud.com readers came out in support of the controversial posters:
“As a Jew I object and will always object to the conflation of Israel with Judaism. Palestinians have been dispossessed of their land on a daily basis. They are thrown out of their homes so that Jews can live there. That is fact, any visitor can see it, it isn’t denied by Israel, it is Israel’s policy. If it hurts the Jews then Jews should act to stop it.”
— Liz Elkind
“Having just come back from Israel and Palestine and seen the plight of Palestinians in the West Bank, it is clear that Israel is engaged in massive dispossession of Palestinians, primarily from what is called Area C (60 percent of the West Bank). The stories of oppression, intimidation and violence told by the victims of Israel’s colonialism are heartbreaking.”
— Peter Miller
“I ride the Metro-North every day and I think the ads are fine.”
— John Kobeck
