New York has a better idea what the new Tappan Zee Bridge will look like in five-plus years after Gov. Cuomo and state officials presented three design finalists Tuesday.
The three conceptual designs, and other details, were gleaned from the three consortiums bidding to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge. The New York State Thruway Authority makes the final choice Dec. 17.
Tappan Zee Bridge Option 1
• Proposed price: $3.142 billion
• Construction time: 5 years, 2.5 months
• Dredging: Approximately 951,000 cubic yards
Option 2
• Proposed price: $3.990 billion
• Construction time: 5 years, 11.5 months
• Dredging: Approximately 1.8 million cubic yards
Option 3

Option 2. #1 and #3 are just plain ugly. My opinion only, of course.
I like option 2 for it’s aesthetics. Other than that it’s the median price tag and it also has the longest construction period which gives the players involved an opportunity to consider additions such as the aforementioned rapid transit system plan.
In my opinion, Option 1 and 3 are not attractive at all. Option 1 looks like crooked H’s or crooked toothpicks; and in Option 3, those big sticks look unfinished. Option 2 is beautiful, especially at night, and during the day the bridge design is non-invasive enough that the eye can focus on the natural scenery and the beauty of the Hudson River. Will somebody with some clout please put a stop to Option 1, please!!!!
When the public disscusion was about retaining the present bridge I suggested retrofitting it for power generation. The new span presents an opportunity for a cutting edge self powered structure. Incorporating wind and water turbines, and solar collecters into the new design could yield a bridge that generates its own power. Excess electricity could be sold back to the utility for further cost reductions. Regardless of the chosen design, this green technology should at least be considered. Frank Leone
Option two is the least hideous. I’m a bit disappointed that none of these bridges have much of a New York feel to them. They seem more like west coast or Chinese bridges.
