With the news that Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin has been accused by the U.S. Attorney of taking bribes in a development scam, we revisit our 2009 endorsement in the Spring Valley mayoral race. Jasmin was then deputy mayor (the job now held by Joseph Desmaret, charged with mail fraud in connection with the alleged scheme). Here’s excerpts from our Oct. 25, 2009 endorsement editorial:
“Working-class Spring Valley needs strong leadership to bring this village out of its troubles.
Current Mayor George Darden, mercifully, has decided not to seek re-election. Current Deputy Mayor Noramie Jasmin is running in his stead, and championing the same “proven effective” economic development policies that have yet to prove much of anything. …
While Jasmin called (Republican candidate and former village Democratic mayor Allan) Thompson’s accomplishments a “big charade,” there remained little proof in the “proven effective” leadership of her eight years in office. …”
